P0138 frustration

Here's my situation, car threw a 0138 code, drivers side downstream of the cat O2 sensor, got it. Thought the cause was from a cylinder #6 misfire so I changed out the coil pack, all the plugs and the O2 sensor. Fired it up, running great (for an '05 with 220K on it), drove it around for a while, "ding" engine light back on and sure 'nuff... 0138 again. Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

Thanks!

Did you clear the code after new parts?

Yes, I forgot to add that to my original post. Disconnected the battery while doing the work, reconnected and pulled fuse #11 before starting the car after putting everything back together.

That was a good idea, now if you get the same code again, you know it isn't a sensor issue, and likely a catalytic converter issue. With that many miles, it wouldn't surprise me if you cat. is bad.

Yea I didn't see the miles, If you haven't replaced your cats, that could be the issue. I have seen the cats busted out and going to a tuning place to delete the rear O2 sensors as well. If you go that route, make sure they are not just deleting the indication, but actually the input, or you won't be doing anything other than not seeing the CEL.

That's my next step, I've actually swapped it back to the left side just to see if I can replicate the problem on both sides with the new sensor. I can't figure out what else it could be, I thought for sure it was a faulty 02 sensor...:?:

I was getting the same code, I replaced mine with NGK 23159 sensor, they say these were the OEM's, purchased mine from Ebay and it worked fine, haven't had the code since over a month ago. and they are the same for all four sensors. I think I got mine for around $30 bucks too, and it was sealed in original plastic. Might want to try that. good luck!

0138 solved... for now!

That was the same NGK sensor I tried and it didn't work, I was able to return it to my local NAPA store. I ended up getting an 02 sensor from the dealer, what I found out was the aftermarket NGK that I got from NAPA said made in Japan stamped on it and the box label, the OEM Mopar sensor is stamped assembled in the USA. After speaking with a few Dodge/Chrysler techs they all said the same thing, some vehicles are real sensitive and some are not, some Bosch, NGK, etc. 02 sensors will work, and some won't, it's hit or miss. My NAPA NGK was $43 and the dealer charged me $50, list was $65 so not bad. Happy to say the vehicle passed emissions no problem and the 0138 issue is over... I hope!
