Coil Overs vs Springs

Hello fellow LX freaks and freakettes! :p God I love this car! It's as if everytime I drive it I'm cheating on my wife. :shock:

Well not cheating, shows knows I drive it, but still. OK THAT was silly. :doh:

Anyway the question is this:

Should I do the Eibach springs only now and then get some nice shocks later OR

Wait for the coil over kit.


My fear is that the coils over kit drops too far (1.6") and the ride would be to harsh. In addition, the Coil Overs are brand new. Maybe wait til the bugs are out of them first.

Any advice?

You can get adjustable coilovers, and then your worry about the drop is negated. Raise and lower at will! Me, I found them to be too pricey, and I'm happy with locking in at 1.3/1.4" drop.

Coilovers don't really make much sense on a Magnum -- its not like you're going to corner weight the car or change springs from time to time. Odds are, once you dial in the suspension to your needs and preferences, you'll keep it that way. The question is: do the other Eibach Sport or Pro springs work for you (i.e. spring rates and ride height)? if so, the coilovers will add nothing, as long as you get proper struts and shocks. You can look into sway bars in either event, but the total cost of the Pro or Sport springs with struts/shocks and sway bars will likely be less than the coilovers alone, Coilovers offer (at least in theory) the ability to dial in the spring rates you like, adjust the dampening accordingly (you'll likely want struts/shocks with adjustable dampening), and set ride height where you want it. Bilstein makes the struts/shocks for the Magnum SRT-8. Does anyone know of a quality performance aftermarket shock for the Magnum (RT, RWD)?

In my personal experience, I hardly ever changed my ride height on the car. Once you set the car height to the desired setting, you just stick to it.
Thus, I would recommend, just get coils/shocks ... Much cheaper this way. :)

I had Eibach springs and they do lower the car but, the stock shocks and struts were not up to my standards. I enjoy driving faster than the law allows most of the time, I want my suspension to follow the road and return a firm "euro" ride. To me the eibach springs with the stock shock/struts returned too much float, hit a low spot in the road @ 80 and it was like a '59 Caddy.

I installed KW coil overs last week, the height is adjustable, not an easy task but you can do it, the tires on the front have to come off to get to the spanner ring. On the rear you have to pull the tire and the shock.

I didn't buy them for the adjustability although it is nice to dial it in where I want it, I got them for the damping adjustments in the shocks/struts. The ride is nice and firm now, the suspension follows the road better, no more float even at high speeds, corners like mad, the tires squeal under force now, something they never did before.

I could have waited on Eibach to come out with their shock/struts or their coil overs but, not sure it would be worth it, the KW's seem to have a high sprung rate on the springs they use which also helps stiffen the ride.

If you can spring for them, do it, you won't be disapointed. I can get the info of a dealer in California that sold them to me for less than suggested retail if anyone is interested. In fact if there is enough interest in them, I'll give him a call and see if he would do a group buy, how much etc....

do the rear coil overs go in the stock spring location or the shock location? if they go in the shock location, can the mount handle the weight of the whole car? i saw the shocks push through the mount on a camaro. just asking.

The rears are not coil overs, it is an adjustable spring perch with an adjustable shock.

I Love My Coilovers, Much Better Than Springs.....The Ride Is Like The Car Is On Rails On Turns, And On The Freeway The Ride Is Way Smooth. But Thats Me.

I'm installing the Eibach pros next week.
WHAT?! :waah: You ask. Well I have never had a lowered car before. I don't want to spend $1200 to find out that I hate it. :roll:

And if I do like it, I'll simply upgrade to the coil overs and sell the springs here.
